Do you ever find yourself needing to take your little one out during nap time? Whether it’s travelling, running errands, or simply being out and about, naps on the go can be a challenge. But don’t worry— with a solid routine and a few helpful tips, you can ensure your child remains well-rested and transitions smoothly, even in unfamiliar situations.
Here are four key strategies to help your child nap on the go while building a strong sleep foundation:
It's important to establish a consistent sleep routine at home so that when you're out, your child has a strong foundation to rely on. Connected time is essential—spend quality time with your child to help them feel secure and ready for sleep. A well-rested child is more likely to transition smoothly into nap time, even in new or distracting environments.
To prepare your child for naps on the go, practise a solid bedtime routine for seven days. This will ensure they are not overtired before you begin any nap routine outside the house. Start your routine when your child is rested and calm, as it’s easier for them to adapt when they’re in a positive, well-rested state.
Using familiar items can comfort your child when sleeping away from home. White noise is a great tool for travelling; it drowns out unfamiliar sounds and signals sleep time. Make sure your child is used to hearing white noise during naps at home. You can also introduce a soft lovey (such as a stuffed toy or favourite book) that’s only used during naps to reinforce that it's time for rest.
Establish a sleep association by offering a small bottle or drink before naps. This can signal that sleep is coming and help your baby prepare for rest, even in an unfamiliar place. While a dark environment is not essential for naps on the go, a light cover for the pram can help create a calmer atmosphere.
Napping on the go doesn’t have to be stressful. By establishing a strong sleep foundation and using familiar cues, you can help your child sleep peacefully, even in new environments. Whether you're off on a quick errand or embarking on a family trip, these tips will keep your little one rested and happy, no matter where life takes you.
